Over the course of time, wave action, freezing and thawing have carved out the shoreline of Lake Superior and made sea caves on Devils Island, Sand Island, and along the mainland near the shore's western boundary. When the lake freezes well enough, you can walk on the lake to visit the spectacular ice formations. In the summer you can visit them in a kayak.
You can ride the ferry boat to Madeline Island. It leaves from Bayfield and is about a twenty minute ride. On the island there is a state park, a historical museum, and bike
